Got an app called ‘Phoster’ a weeks ago, it’s quite fun, allows you to edit templates using your own images and text to create your own posters.
Above is one of my first try outs on the app.
My artist book final for my “Bookworks” project. The book is about the collision of racism and sexism.
I was told that this subject matter may be “too dangerous” and Ive had people tell me at the beginning of this project that ‘racism doesn’t exist’. So after my social awareness depression projects good turn out, I thought I’d go for another social awareness theme. I gathered stories and experiences from women of colour in the UK and my book simply reveals five quotes and allows viewers to see things from a different perspective.
The idea is that you would use the white or black card to slide through the page to read the book.
The white peice of card reveals the text but with less impact compared to the black. This represents the idea that many are aware that racism and sexism exists (not all, based on survey results) and the text can easily be ignored due to low contrast which means it isn’t clear and impact the viewer as much as the black text would. The first card when slid through gives you a feel of privilege. You are aware of the text, the issue, but not fully ‘experiencing’ for as long as that card remains in that page.
When the black card is slide though it reveals the text, much clearer than the white (due to high contrast) it exposes the reality for many who face sexism and racism, unable to ignore it and where it is even in media, ads, tv etc. This card represents the experience.
I’d sum up the project with these words: contrast, experience, colour (tints&shades), racism, sexism and awareness.(Thank you to those who shared their stories with me and allowed me to use it for this artists book and thank you to my mum for teaching me how to use the sowing machine.)
I have a much better explanation in my sketchbook of this peice (hopefully this one makes sense) but I’ve handed it already! Hopefully it goes well.
Have a good evening everyone!
